Time To Give Ukraine Cruisers

Solution for Ukraine’s Russian blockade problem: cruisers! Pictured here is USS Bunker Hill, base photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman John Grandin of the United States Navy, 2011, via Wiki Commons. Green notes mine, obviously. Yes I’m aware it’s properly a ship not a boat, I’m doing a cat-dad joke :)
Basic overview of Black Sea situation if Ukraine could maintain just two cruisers on station. Base image from liveuamap, colored marks mine and, I think, self-explanatory despite my inability to draw better digitally than by hand.
  • U.S. Navy gets to cut costs and hopefully get funding to boost production of the new Arleigh Burke Flight III destroyers, which are more capable than the cruisers anyway.
  • Ukraine gets a coastal system that all but guarantees Russia can never hope to land near Odesa, and cover to clear the coast of mines so civilian shipping can safely resume.
Basic operational concept for retaking Snake Island. Base image from liveuamap. Colored marks mine. ASM range shows approximate distance surface ships can be hit with Harpoon anti-ship missiles. SAM range shows approximate extent of Standard surface to air missile coverage. Yellow marks secure shipping corridor within Ukraine’s territorial waters leading to Romania’s once Snake Island is retaken.
