Ah, I love it when I see a system I think about a lot so perfectly summarized!

I just don't think there's a way to do political media without a BBC-style publicly funded and independent outlet. NPR tries, but it knows who its audience is like all the other outlets and that distorts coverage.

Journalism is always bound to be a difficult and contested world, but the intrusion of profit incentives has all but destroyed it in America. Facebook algorithms want profitable content, which is always going to be the most sketchy tabloid stuff. Every news organization relies on Facebook, so their profit depends on getting as tabloidy as possible. Writers wind up debasing simple logic trying to contort arguments to appeal to particular demographics.

And don't get me started on the fundamental dishonesty of most political spin artists whose BS goes unchallenged, and so spreads with a patina of authority about it.
